It's hard to imagine that some events now deemed historical actually happened in our lifetimes. Maybe one day I'll look back at short sales and say it's hard to imagine a time when it took 3 to 4 months to get an approval letter. My husband, as some of you know, is off traveling around for the month of October. Most recently, he was in Little Rock, Arkansas, to attend a reunion of former employees of the defunct Arkansas Gazette.
He sent me this photo of Little Rock Central High School. For my readers who were not alive in 1957, this is the former home of The Little Rock Nine. Nine African American students who needed the protection of the United States Army just to register and attend school. White students erupted in protest, threw rocks at the cars of these children, and the crisis was all over the news worldwide.
We needed the Army -- the United States Army! -- to integrate our nation's schools.
You may want to believe that discrimination is over but it is far from over. Just yesterday, a prospective buyer from the Bay area called to check on the status of one of my Sacramento short sales. She had been looking for a Sacramento short sale agent to help her buy a home for her son near the Med Center. I had such a listing. It's in escrow and closing next week.
She said to me, "I don't want to buy in that neighborhood because there are too many Pakistanis and Muslims."
I hung up on her.
Then, I wept.
