Almost everybody I talk to lately says they are overwhelmed with business. Escrow companies are swamped with foreclosures and refinances. Agents are showing property like crazy to first-time home buyers. Sellers are calling to obtain pre-listing advice and prepare for the Sacramento spring real estate market.
In my little world, there are days when my phone doesn't stop ringing. My publisher sent a request late Friday for an updated biography and a list of individuals who may endorse my short sale book. I don't have time to think about contacting people for an endorsement nor do I have any ideas for PR. I have listings to take, escrows to close, buyers to show property to, blogs to write, cats to feed, articles to write for my homebuying web site, not to mention dealing with 2008 taxes -- and there's this HGTV woman who is asking about whether I'll consider doing some remodeling show.
It's rare that I get a day off, which is how I stay organized. I juggle a lot of stuff. So, when I start to feel overwhelmed or stressed out, I put on my gardening gloves and head outdoors. It's amazing how stress can fade away simply because I'm focused on nature. Yesterday, in a series of breaks from the computer, I pruned all my rose bushes and a butterfly bush. Well, I shouldn't call it a bush. It's about 12-feet tall.
Some people go to the gym; others go shopping; some knead bread, ride bicycles, visit with friends, work on a hobby, but I pull weeds. Go figure. I'll tell you one thing it does apart from improving the yard, it makes every muscle in my body ache. That way I can spend more time thinking about how to relieve sore joints than how much real estate stuff I have to finish. Nothing that a hot soak in the spa and a couple of ibuprofen won't fix.
And before I forget, I'd like to thank my AR-friend from Flushing, New York (and Club-Chaos fame), Carolyn Tann-Starr, for calling me yesterday and helping me with a technical question -- she is simply brilliant, and a hoot to boot.
