Here's How to Medicate Your Cat and Live to Talk About It

Pia and Pica ocicatsIt's pretty difficult to outsmart a cat. If you have a cat, you know exactly what I mean. You've always got to be on your toes because cats are quick to learn and, unlike humans, tend to not repeat their mistakes. Our cinnamon-spotted ocicat, Pia, is a tiny little thing compared to the other two cats, but she rules the house. Probably because the other 2 are males.

She has developed acne on her chin, which is not responding to ointment. That means we now have to give her antibiotics in liquid form twice a day for 2 weeks.

As a result, every day is a new challenge. Sort of like selling Sacramento short sales. I have to figure out how to a) capture her and b) hold her still while I c) shoot liquid down her throat. She turns into a big ball of Claws-R-Us. Her strength is amazing for a 7-pound cat. And, after she is medicated, I turn into evil an witch whom she's never, ever, talking to again.

My newest plan is to pre-fill the syringe and set it inside the refrigerator on a shelf. When she comes crawling out of the bedroom meowing at me, I will gently pick her up, stroke her fur, murmur sweet things into her ear, while I inch ever so slowly toward the towel draped over the chair. Which I will then snatch, quickly wrap her in and, with a free hand, open the frig, grab the syringe, yank back her head and down the throat it goes.

But I'll have to devise a new plan for tonight. Next time, she won't let me get near the refrigerator before she has clawed off my face.
