My grandmother was born in Hungary in 1903 and passed away in 1988. She told me shortly before her death that she was tired of living and was ready to go. I've never really understood that concept but perhaps I'm not old enough yet to reach that conclusion. I can't fathom it. But then I'm in relatively good health with very few vices except for chocolate.
Whenever my grandmother came to visit when I was a child, she used to bring me a box of See's Candies. Did you know that See's Candies was founded in 1921 in San Francisco? That means my grandmother was 18 when the company started. She might have even purchased one of See's first boxes of chocolates.
Well, yesterday I thought of my grandmother when I opened an envelope with an Oakland, California, postmark. There was no return address. Inside was a thank you letter from a woman named Deanna. She said, "Thank you for giving me excellent information and advice on impounds and loan transfers. I've learned some very valuable lessons. Enclosed is a small token of appreciation for your personalized help. Happy Valentine's Day."
The thing is I don't remember giving this advice but I most likely did. I receive dozens of emails and a couple phone calls every day from readers of my About.com homebuying site. I am touched that I made a difference to somebody, even if I don't know who she is or recall our conversation.
Inside the thank-you note were two certificates redeemable for See's Candies, good for one pound of chocolates each. Thank you, Deanna. In more ways than one.
