I'm going to a place today that doesn't exist. Well, the place exists, but there is no such town. It's an area, a valley, not a city. That place is Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I'm obviously not a snow skier or I would know that. There is a town called Jackson, however, and we're spending tonight there. It'll probably be at least 50 degrees cooler in Jackson today than in Sacramento.
People ask how I stay sane when I sell so many Sacramento short sales, and this is how I do it. Every so often, I get away. I go somewhere totally foreign. A place where nobody is talking about a short sale. Last year it was Viet Nam. This year, it's Yellowstone National Park.
When I was trying to figure out what types of clothing to bring, I decided to pop over to the Yellowstone Webcams put online by the National Park Service. It's really cool because you can watch people walking around. You can also watch streaming video of real-time Old Faithful geyser eruptions.
Weather reports don't necessarily tell you much, you know. I mean, you know the low and the high but in Yellowstone that could mean the difference between shorts or jeans. Most people were wearing jackets, hats and they had their hands in their pockets. I take it that means no sandals for me.
We made our reservations more than a year ago, right before Ken Burns' The National Parks came out on DVD. This seems like the perfect time of the year to go to Yellowstone. Crowds are much thinner just before some of the lodges close for the season. I don't believe there is Internet, either. We're talking remote and wild.
And Myrl, if you're reading this, don't worry about security -- we have people at the house, taking care of it and the cats. Linda Swanson, my team member, is handling my escrows and listings.
Worry instead about the supervolcano caldera. And not just because I'm there. The largest volcano caldera in North America is at Yellowstone. The last time it erupted was about 640,000 years ago and some experts believe we are overdue for an eruption. This volcanic area is 1,500 square miles. An eruption would not only obliterate the park, but it would cause worldwide destruction from volcanic ash. Which could block out the sun, kill plants and wildlife, and possibly throw us into another ice age.
