How Important is a Sales Background to Real Estate?

When I see people in sales professions working so hard to make a few sales that probably pay pittances, I can't help but wonder why they aren't in real estate. Maybe that's why, though. Because they are not confident enough in their own abilities to make it in a 100%-based commisson world. Maybe that's why some other agents prefer to join a discount brokerage where they still make peanuts but receive a salary.

It's a bit scary to work on your own without a safety net, basing your success on your own abilities. By the way, it was Chris Ann Cleland who inspired me to explore this topic in my own life. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: How a Sales Background Helps Real Estate Agents.

What Entices People to Begin a Real Estate Career?
It is no secret that for the majority of real estate agents, real estate is a second or third career choice. Rarely what they start out to do. You don't really hear children proudly proclaiming they want to grow up to become a real estate agent… more
Many Revisions to Sacramento MLS in 2019
The last time I checked, our MLS is owned at least 50% by a handful of brokers in Sacramento. You would think that MLS might reach out to its membership through a survey to determine which features are useful or to gather opinions on types of… more
Having a Title and Escrow Background Paid Off Again
Many people try their hand at real estate after coming from title or escrow backgrounds, but not everybody makes it as a Realtor. In fact, it can be a bit of a drawback for people who think they know everything. I was once one of those people who… more
Is Demand for Human Interaction in Real Estate at Risk?
It seems every time you get excited over a new piece of technology, it often results in more people losing their jobs. Gone are the days when you can call a local department store, reach a clerk who works there, and find out if an item is in stock… more
Do You Ignore Clients Who Hold Unreasonable Views?
There are some agents in Sacramento who flat out do not work with clients they deem to be too much work. By that I mean buyers and sellers who hold unreasonable views. You know, everybody and their uncle has ideas about how an agent should sell a… more
The Realtor Safety App and Leaving Keys in Locks
I watched the video last week about the Realtor Safety App that our Metrolist in Sacramento is introducing to us as a member benefit. For starters, I can't figure out why Metrolist would pay for a service for us. They haven't been exactly member… more
Bureaucracy and the Ignorant are Part of Real Estate
My physical presence in Hawaii while I work on Sacramento real estate these past two weeks has been helpful in dealing with what would be deemed difficult circumstances if I were not in Hawaii. There is a calmness that supercedes some of the… more
Did You Earn Your Real Estate Reputation?
There is something about this particular photograph that speaks to so many possible issues in Sacramento real estate, but to me the guy looks like a ditz. Maybe it's his shoes, probably European, or his over-sized feet. The shoes are too clean, as… more
The Odds That Your Sacramento Listing Will Get Screwed Up
I am talking about the little annoyances in a real estate transaction, that all by themselves are not unbearable but when lumped together in a giant heaping pile of you-know-what make an agent want to pull out her hair. It's all of those things… more
