How to Communicate With Non-English Speaking Clients

With JaCi out working hard yesterday (and today, she's taking two more listings for the team), I set aside time to finish reading Becoming, by Michelle Obama. She writes in part about how difficult it was for her husband to work in a Congress where bi-partisan efforts were constantly shut down. I can relate that to real estate and having to work with agents who openly dislike talking to top listing agents because the property is not their own listing. Similar. Not identical but similar.

Everybody has their own agenda.

As JaCi was driving to a listing appointment yesterday, she also received a phone call from a non-English speaking woman. She writes about that interaction today, and how she discovered new ways to communicate.

We live in such a diverse city, Sacramento; at one time in 2006, media called us the "most diverse city in America." Developing new ways to communicate is paramount. And you can read more about it our blog today at this link: More on Translation App Tricks in Real Estate.

Why Are ADT Home Security Guys Scamming Realtors?

Now, apart from the fact they are probably violating RESPA by offering a referral fee of $200 to agents who cough up private and sensitive information about their clients, these ADT home security companies are alienating agents left and right… more
Becoming Immune to Telemarketers and Time Wasters

In the olden days, like a dozen years ago, my demeanor was a lot more polite than it is now. When I answered my phone, I would engage in a conversation with whomever was on the other end of the phone. If I received a telemarketing call, I asked… more
When Confidence is Authentic and Not Walk Like a Duck

This topic makes me think about a former and now deceased husband who liked the phrase, if you walk like a duck, talk like a duck, then you are a duck. He was a seminar speaker, one of the early pioneers in real estate. His focus was turning… more
Why Doofus Agents Give Our Profession a Bad Name

Here is my cheery New Year's Eve message today. As Hella Rothwell and I gaze from our balcony at the ocean and Diamond Head from our top floor room at the Halekulani. It constantly astonishes me when agents display such stupid behavior in the name… more
Figuring Out What a Real Estate Client Wants

Some agents learn how to sell real estate by memorizing sales techniques and making canned statements. It works for them, I guess, but it's never been authentic to me. Yeah, yeah, all the world's a stage and we are but bit actors, still, it doesn't… more
This is What Lowlife Scumball Agents Do to Us

Let me be clear that I am not badmouthing all agents. It is always just a few that ruin it for the rest of us. One thing I have noticed over my 40+ years in real estate is there seems to be a) no shortage of scumball agents and b) that puts us… more
How Parties Can Sue Dual Agents in California

Who is most likely to sue in a California real estate transaction? I've seen statistics that point to the buyers. Most sellers are getting a big ol' pile of money at closing, so they usually don't have much to complain about. One of the reasons I… more
Dealing With Out of Area Agents as Buyers

Sometimes, you just can't win by trying, but it does help to keep your priorities in focus. I do this by looking at the big picture and reassessing situations, especially when encountering out of area agents. It can be tough when that agent is… more
How to Handle Showing Vacant Homes in Sacramento

One of the drawbacks for me with the way Zillow imports data from MLS is my name needs to be first on the listing. I really prefer my team member's name to be first so he or she can directly manage the buyer calls. However, with my name first in… more
