Jerry Brown filed a complaint last Wednesday, November 10th, on behalf of the People of the State of California against a hair product company. It's a lawsuit against Brazilian Blowout.
Now, I'm not a big adapter of new trends until they are proven, just as a general course of action. I didn't run out and buy granite counters just because all the high-end homes in Land Park have them. Although, I did eventually settle on Quartz. It took me years to remove the fuzzy tank covers from my bath. I won't download a brand new Microsoft product until the bugs have been worked out because I've been burned too many times. Yet, when my hairstylist talked to me about doing a Brazilian Blowout treatment, it took her only three tries before I caved in.
My hairstylist works at a trendy Midtown Sacramento salon, which shall remain nameless. On her counter sits an advertising piece for Brazilian Blowout, featuring Nicole Richie and Halle Berry as endorsements of the product. I was assured the product was perfectly safe and unlike other hair straightening products because it wouldn't damage my hair nor strip its color. Little did I know that the product contains methylene glycol (ethylene glycol is an organic compound used as antifreeze), which produces formaldehyde gas. Formaldehyde is known to cause cancer in rats.
Because I'm a Sacramento short sale agent, I don't have a lot of time to spend on my hair. I'm constantly on the go. I need a hair style that is wash-and-run, which is actually one of the reasons I cut my hair so short. I tried the naturally curly route, which just looked stupid. I mean, woof, woof, I looked like a poodle. Having straight, no-fuss hair was appealing. Hello Brazilian Blowout.
In case you're wondering, the Brazilian Blowut process works like this: The hairstylist washes your hair. Then she / he applies the Brazilian Blowout product which, by the way, stung like hell. My scalp was burning and my eyes were watering. It felt like my scalp was on fire and being poked by a hundred straight pins, yet like a fool I endured the pain. I've had my hair bleached many times and nothing hurt like this before. After the product is painted on every strand, the hairstylist blow drys your hair, then uses a hot flat iron to straighten it. Wash again, condition, blow dry and go. Silky, straight, smooth hair.
Less than $200 in Midtown Sacramento salons.
The CDC says formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that can cause depression, headaches, fatigue and, in some dosages, death. Rats.
