California's annual 77th State Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, themed "We Celebrate," is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9th at 4:30 PM. The ceremony begins on the West steps of the State Capitol building, with the official lighting of the tree at 5:15.
In partnership with CaliforniaVolunteers, Gov. Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver are asking for food contributions to support WE Can Holiday Food Drive. You can bring your food donations to the West steps of the Capitol; after the celebration, donations can be dropped off at the North entrance to the Capitol.
We've got entertainment at the ceremony, too. Rick Springfield will perform, among other musical guests such as Sheryl Lee Ralph and the Varsity Club, including the Unity Community Choir and Galena Street East.
In case you're wondering about whether California, in the midst of the worst financial crisis in history, can afford to illuminate the tree, know that its 6,500 low-wattage LED lights will save the state 95% of the energy that would ordinarily be consumed by using incandescent. Besides, the lights are powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which is donated by Altergy Systems, and the hydrogen for the cell is donated by Air Products.
See, this is one of the great reasons to live in Sacramento, the capital of California. We have all the fun next Tuesday: The Governor and First Lady, celebrities, music and the official state Christmas tree. Eat your hearts out, Los Angeles.
