Elvis Costello should move to Clarksburg, California. In fact, I have the perfect home for sale in Clarksburg. I was thinking about this when my husband and I went to the Mondavi Center in Davis last night to see Elvis Costello perform solo.
It was sort of like the old days of MTV Unplugged. Except the stage was set up to accommodate 2 performers with at least 3 guitars in both sections. At one point in the performance, Costello said, "I'd like to introduce my guest artist this evening," and he quickly dashed over to the other side of the stage, grabbed a seat and microphone, and admitted that the guest artist was him.
If Costello lived in this home in Clarksburg, he could convert the garages to a recording studio. This home has covered parking for 16 cars. It's so remote that you can hardly even see a neighbor. Well, there is that mini-mansion of 6,000-some square feet way, way, way off in the distance. That's sort of becoming a trend in Clarksburg -- to buy up a parcel of land and build a giant house.
It's very peaceful and quiet. The Delta is a special place. Some people compare it to Napa because of the number of family-owned vineyards. In fact, Bogle is building a new winery in Clarksburg and putting in a vineyard across the street from this home, but its preliminary reports show, the sellers say, that there will be no significant nuisance factor regarding noise nor traffic. Just grapes.
The home has an expansive porch across the front. I can imagine Costello relaxing in a rocker on the front porch, surrounded by his guitars, sipping a Bogle 2008 Pinot Noir and watching the air show. The air show is not planes. It's birds. Hundreds of birds following a leader, swooping, changing directions and soaring before landing quietly in the trees and grass.
Like many of the homes in Clarksburg, this was originally a farmhouse. It is the Holmes former place. It's had additions over the years. The previous owners once pulled a 3-room cabin down the road, rolling it on logs, and added it to the home. All together, I counted 7 bedrooms and 3 baths. The sellers estimate the square footage is 3,100, with 2,300 square feet on the first floor and separate guest quarters on the second floor of about 800 square feet.
Local rumor has it that this home was built in 1938, with the additions put up in the late 1950s / early 1960s. The present sellers remodeled the home in the late 1980s. They put in dual pane windows mostly throughout, installed redwood siding and replaced the leach field for the septic system. It has a 200-foot deep well. You'll also find beautiful hardwood floors under the carpeting in the bedrooms.
The main floor has 4 bedrooms and a den, but the den has a closet, so it could technically be a bedroom, too. The master suite features a walk-in closet and separate bath. Upstairs, you'll find a kitchen with a vintage Kelvinator refrigerator and Philco stove, plus 2 more bedrooms and a bath. Great in-law or guest quarters.
In addition to an orchard with 30-some variety of fruit-bearing trees and 50-plus rosebushes, there is a deck in the back yard and a sparkling pool. The home sits on 1.77 acres.
