Since Hella Rothwell was so kind as to find a way to fit a visit with me in Lanai into her holiday plans, the least I could do was offer to treat her to lunch at the Views at Manale Golf. After all, she flew from Honolulu, and I hopped the Maui Ferry to Lanai from Lahania to meet up at the Four Seasons in Manele Bay. This is one of my favorite Four Seasons hotels in a gorgeous remote setting that makes you feel gloriously alive.
As we strolled down the ancient volcanic beds rising above the sea that overlooks Sweetheart Rock, my phone rang. It was an obscure agent asking me questions about a short sale she struggled with. She couldn't get her story out in a coherent sentence, and expected to discuss her entire strategy with me right then and there.
I was willing to answer one question, just to be helpful to a stranger, and I told her I was with a friend on the island of Lanai, walking along the beach, so ask me one question and I'll answer. But the agent continued firing questions, demanding answers.
What is this? I don't get paid by the hour. I don't get paid to talk to her at all. Some people are so self-centered, it blows me away. I wished her luck and hung up. Now she'll probably run over to YELP and post a nasty review. That's how rotten some people are. In the future, I'll probably just say, uh oh, my connection in Hawaii is bad and disconnect.
I brought Hella a birthday present, a Hawaiian guardian, hand-carved from clay, painted, adorned with feathers. Now I wish I had bought one of those for myself. I did not think to take a photo of it, either, darn. Maybe Hella will post a picture? But I did shoot a ton of other photos of our day-long adventure on the island of Lanai.
You can see a bunch more photographs and read more about that day in my personal blog at this link: Maui Ferry to Lanai is an Escape to Paradise from Ka'anapali.
