I do believe it; I do believe it's true.
The guidebook says there are 200-some cloudy days in Portland, Oregon, and yesterday was one of those days. We decided to hop the light rail at Pioneer Square and go to the Oregon Zoo. It was a fairly short ride, but I was not prepared for the train to plunge into the West Hills of Portland, and barrel along at such a high speed in darkness.
It dropped us at a station 220-feet below street level. This station is the deepest underground in the country. Then, an elevator transported us to the surface. Made me feel all Star Trekky-like.
Portland is environmentally conscious. Because we took public transportation to the Zoo, that entitled us to a discount on our tickets, which I immediately blew on popcorn.
Below are photos from the Oregon Zoo:

These are great photos Elizabeth. Portland is only about 2 hours away from where I live in Washington and is always worth a visit.
Great photos! Our Houston Zoo is great but there are some very obvious missing occupants! We have NO gorillas and NO Zebras. My 3 year old daughters favorite animal is the Zebra and my wife's favorite animal is the Gorilla. My favorite has always been the Tigers but I can hardly stand to see them couped up in a zoo...
Great photos Elizabeth. It looks like you had a great time.
Love the Zebra and the polar bear... although I half expected to see the polar bear drink a coca cola. Don't really like seeing an eagle caged up, makes me kind of sad.
Wow... 220' below street level? Beam me up Scottie! Great photo's of the wildlife, Elizabeth. :)
Hi Elizabeth, 220 feet below street level, wow, how long is that tunnel!? I love the polar bears, they are one of my favorites at the zoo.
Does the cloudy day make the animals more active. Looks like they were out and active.
Elizabeth: What wonderful pictures. Sounds like you are having a great time on your getaway. Love the picture of that cat. What breed of cat is that?
Elizabeth, I love your photos. It looks like you are having a fabulous time! Enjoy!
A popcorn lover. A great photog. (Or with a great photog lover.) Who knew?
Portland is the greatest city of its size anywhere.
I am glad to be only two hours away.
The city government is a little crazy though.
But then isn't everybody's.
You've captured some wonderful pictures, Elizabeth! I had no idea that Portland even had an underground train system. I am envious of parts of the country, and the globe which have efficient high speed travel. London was my first experience with a subway system, and then New York City. I think in California we are far too married to the car.
We love the zoo...to add to your own personal zoo...please see your invite on the dozen cuzin blog...David says lots of animals have better personalities than people....sure wish they could buy and sell houses...
Great photos! Can I ask what kind of camera you used? Did it come with its own software or are you using a different photo-shop? Sorry to grill you...I'm thinking of buying a new one! :) Thanks
Great photo's, we were just at the San Dieo Zoo and Wild Animal Park a couple weeks ago. The kids were so amazed at the animals there...I could have stayed in front of the exhibits for hours just watching the interaction between the animlas. Quite amazing!
Elizabeth - beautiful photos and I LOVE Portland - thanks for sharing the fun!
Hi Elizabeth... all the animals look well cared for and very happy to be in Portland! Quite a testament to their adopted city!
Hey Kirsten, I'm using a Nikon with zoom lens. I didn't "doctor" these photos at all except to resize them. Glad you guys like them!
P.S. Ron, my favorite animal is the giraffe, but I didn't have room for more photos.
