Dealing with Icky Gnat Swarms in Hawaii

By the time I called the electric company, workers were at my house in mere minutes. I don't know if they have a guy who lives near by or what, but boy was that amazingly fast. When my power went out during a rainstorm in Sacramento, hours passed before anybody stopped by the house, but in Hawaii the service call was immediate.

So yeah, this weekend, I had no electricity, and no water and then swarms of gnats later when the power came back. Just to fix a fire hydrant in the street caused a pipe to burst and workers also managed to mess up the electrical. But it's the gnats that were the worst thing to deal with this weekend. For some reason, maybe climate change, Hawaii has a stronger infestation of gnats than usual this year.

Every few minutes, while watching TV, I have to jump outta my chair and smack the screen. I was very determined to kill each and every last one of them. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: Without Water or Electricity and Killing Gnats in Hawaii.

Well, I'm certainly happy I'm not in your shoes, Elizabeth! Had no idea about using Windex to kill ants, gnats, etc. I don't even have a bottle of Windex in my house! And as we have our home treated quarterly inside and out against all sorts of bugs, fortunately I don't see any... just mosquitoes if I forget to close windows when it gets warm.

Nina Hollander I have pest control treatments on the exterior every 3 months as well. Many people don't have baseboards or carpeting, which negates the need to treat interiors. But my friend down the block, she leaves her doors to the lanai wide open all the time but she also has a cat and a dog. If you have a cat, no geckos.

Well, I have baseboards and hardwoods and carpet! I also have a cat... but no geckos here in any event!

Nina Hollander I would not like to see a gecko dangling from a cat's jaws.

Well, you got the job done, didn't you, Elizabeth! I know I've never met you but, I envisioned you popping up and down swatting at the gnats while watching TV!!

Glad you're back on the grid - and gnatless too! Enjoy Hawaii!

Debe Maxwell, CRS My neighbors could not believe my story. They say gnats move too quickly to smack them. Well, they just don't have fast reflexes like me. They're also a bit older.

This is all I have to say, Elizabeth, about that image:

Nina Hollander I'll even smack 'em with my hands if a flyswatter is unavailable.
