Elizabeth Weintraub • Sacramento Real Estate Agent: Which GPS Do REALTORS Use for Navigation?

Which GPS Do REALTORS Use for Navigation?

There is some kind of deal with my Mercedes where I get free GPS for 3 years, and then I think they try to find a way to charge for it. Everybody seeks subscription-based services today so they can charge you over and over. You own nothing. You lease everything.

Which wouldn't be so bad if it was a decent GPS that came with my vehicle, but it's a terrible system. It's clunky and old fashioned, and it works like crap. Half the time the system cannot understand the street names, which is why they provide you with a spelling capacity, but they won't let you use it when you're driving. Imagine that.

Most of the time, I don't even use the installed GPS because it's such a PITA. Instead, I set up my phone app GPS voices to a UK female accent . . . because I am not listening to directions from a male authority figure or some bossy witch.

Which is all well and fine unless you accidentally set two GPS to go off at the same time.

Hello Elizabeth - I renenber when I first used a GPS device and I "interviewed" the different candidates for the job - you know, different accents and such.  It's so much better to know the local area like the good old days.  I think I'm channeling Archie Bunker now.   Gee, the old LaSalle ran great...

As for those "easy" to subscribe services - hmm -- fool me once...shame on you...but fool me twice....

Hi Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents, I had a visual as I read your personal blog. I've done the same thing and ended up going with common sense. I have Google installed in my car, Apple on my phone, I do like Google better.

I had a Magellan navigation device that I used for years, but it has bit the dust.  More recently, I use Google maps on my cellphone.  I'm not finicky about that stuff, Elizabeth.  I still remember using Thomas Brothers Map Books to navigate.

I use whatever system came in my Prius - it's great having visual as well as audible directions; it gets me where I want to go!

I jsut connect my phone in the car and Android Auto pulls up Google mapping and off I go... so far, so good. And free.

Hi Elizabeth- I prefer Google Maps but I also use Waze if I'm on a road trip or driving through the city. I've never liked the GPS's that are built into cars so even before Google or Apple we had a Garmin that we could put in any car. We named her Mabel. I have no idea why but that's the name that stuck. And on big road trips, I always take a road atlas as well.

Michael Jacobs You make me laugh. Although fairly certain there is no Archie Bunker GPS voice.

Beth Atalay yes, nothing like two voices coming at you with different directions. Go south on 99, no, go east on 50. Acckk.

Barbara Todaro BMW, too. Well, maybe it's the European manufacturers that are the problem. When you buy a luxury car, why did they put zero thought into the GPS? The Mercedes GPS totally sucks. It's so antiquated.

Myrl Jeffcoat I probably have an old Thomas Guide under my seats somewhere.

Lottie Kendall I did not splurge for a GPS when I bought my husband his Prius. Probably should have. It was the only option I skipped because he thinks of himself as "map boy" and did not want to insult his intelligence nor navigational skills.

Nina Hollander Whenever I connect my phone, it starts playing music, and I can't make it stop. I took it to the dealer for an answer and they said, "turn the volume down."

I understand your "map boy" husband. I, too, love maps--they give one a feel for distance and relation between points. the GPS efficiently gets one from A to B, but without understanding the relationships.
