I hate to report this, but Dave and Gisela Haskin are closing Broadway Hardware next month and calling it quits. I talked with the Haskins a couple months ago and at that time, they had said nothing about closing down the store. I'm so sorry to see them leave Land Park. I shop at Broadway Hardware at least a couple times a month, but I guess my small purchases haven't made a dent in the business. It seems most people go to the big box stores, which is a crying shame.
Broadway Hardware has been here for 18 years. It's a landmark in Land Park. Where will we go to get keys, screws, paint, those emergency plumbing supplies? There's Hollywood Park Hardware on Freeport Blvd., just south of Ralph's, Capitol Ace on 18th and I, and East Sacramento Hardware at 48th and Folsom, but none of those stores hold a candle to Broadware Hardware. It's a sad day in Land Park. :(

Sadly, the community stores like this are a relic of the past. Without the support of their neighbors, they just fade away. It is a pity to see them go.
Hi Fred: I know, but I'm still sick about it. Guess I better run over and buy furnace filters in bulk. That's what my husband wants. The liquidation sale starts tomorrow, I think.
While we are discussing global warming, the globalization of our lives is visible and you do not need scientists to argue about them.
Anywhere you go you would see pretty much the same. Not only within the nation, but, actually, well beyond.
What are going to do with WalMarts? And I do not hate them, I just know that they would drive everyone else out.
There is nobody to blame, but it is so sad
Hi Jon: You always think it's the other guys, and your special places will be protected; it's human nature to want to believe that. It's just wishful thinking, in many cases. When the economic crisis hits close to home, it hurts more because it's more real. It makes you wonder what is next? What other institution that you have come to rely upon and support will hit the skids. But life goes on. Change happens. So, you can't let it get you down. It's something over which you have no control. So you concentrate on the things you can control and move forward.
Elizabeth, we are seeing businesses close here in Redding. We've lost three out of six title companies and my favorite escrow officer was just let go two weeks ago. I just hope we don't lose our Trader Joe's that is being built.....they postponed....several times and I hope they don't reconsider and pull-out. Our Mervyns is one of the one's that is closing. We've had 2 out six Starbucks close...and while those are disturbing....it does not compare to our local store that has been in the neighborhood forever and are our friends. I'm so sorry for your friends.
Our local hardware store closed recently too. It's a shame that the Mom and Pop operations are not supported more.
Hi Jeanean: I'm sorry to hear that downturn has affected Redding so severely. I was hoping your area was more protected, more self contained. :( I read today that Circuit City is also closing a bunch of stores.
Hi Ellie: Small grocery stores, independent book stores and local gas stations have been feeling the aftermath of Big Box monopolies for years, but now, even 70- and 100-year-old small business operations are folding.
My husband is losing his job, too. He's been a hard-working and dedicated newspaper journalist for 22 years. Writing for a newspaper is all he knows how or wants to do. There are no newspaper jobs. Everybody is cutting back. The best he found so far was a court reporter position in Lodi, which wouldn't even pay for the gas to drive there.
It's hard on all of us.
Elizabeth - Aww! That is a shame... I really like to see the small businesses succeed... :(
