When I was a little kid growing up in Minnesota, the thing that piqued my excitement at the end of the winter -- more so than whether some groundhog in Pennsylvania saw his shadow, and second only to my first sighting of a robin -- was watching tender flowers stretch and yawn and push their fragile bodies through packed snow. A sparkle of color and life. A reason for hope. Spring was just around the corner.
Now that I live in Sacramento, I still yearn for signs that winter is nearly over. That the rains will ease up. It's not the same as finding a hyacinth poking its head through patches of ice, but early spring flowers do breathe life into an otherwise decaying garden.
Although it was slightly overcast yesterday, I managed to shoot a few photos of my gardens in Land Park, Sacramento. I hope you enjoy these flowers. This is what Land Park yards look like in the spring. There's also a surprise for you at the end. :)

Elizabeth - I lvoe all those flowers, and the squirrel, how cute he is!! It is nice to see the flowers blooming for spring! Calla lillies are one of my favorites.
I am so jealous! We are more than a month away from daffodils, probably 6 weeks away! The pictures are gorgeous and the squirrel is delightful! Pesky little bugger!
Well, we do experience spring sooner in Sacramento than in other parts of the country. We're experiencing a drought right now and our governor has said we need to cut back 20% on our water usage, so I am very happy for the rain today, even though I'm showing property this afternoon.
My tamukeyama is beginning to bud, as well as my Japanese maple. In another month or so, everything in Land Park will be in bloom.
Wow, these are great photos. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Elizabeth,
Flowers are nice, but how on earth did you manage to have the squirrel pose for this photo. Wonderful shot. I know that flowers are "patient" and you can walk around and try, but squirrels do not usually cooperate with the photographer.
Hi Elizabeth, Thank you for the beautiful Spring flowers, we still have a while to go here. Your squirrel looks like he's looking for a hand out; "please Elizabeth, do you have something for me to eat?"
I didn't ask for permission from the squirrel. Actually, I was trying to shoot the berries on my holly tree, turned around and noticed him. I shot more than 50 photos of him. Guess it's called patience. LOL.
Elizabeth: I planted some bulbs that I can't wait to see bloom this Spring. Love the squirrel!
Elizabeth: You are making me home sick. This is my old stomping grounds. I grew up in Land Park - Thanks for putting a smile on my face. The camellias are beautiful.
What's going on, Elizabeth? No pics of any nice, friendly little skunks?!?!? LOL
What gorgeous flowers. And you end with a picture of Nutsy!! He needs to get dressed. Don't surprise him any more!
Elizabeth - The posies are gorgeous - BUT that squirrel is too cute for words!
Elizabeth, I love your calla lilly, camelia, daffodils, and your little squirel...or is it a chipmunk? Can't tell the difference. I actually have managed to keep my calla lillies alive until the heat comes, and then they die out - only to come back out in October. They're really blooming now...and my roses, and my gardenias...love spring...;-)
I've been eyeing with jealousy the squirrel photos that Jesse in Anchorage has been able to capture . . . waiting, stalking, waiting for my moment, bwwahahhaha.
Beautiful pictures Elizabeth. We are about 6 weeks away and I can hardly wait to see some life in the landscaping again.
hyacinth poking its head through patches of ice
Forgive me for the link, but after looking at your beautiful photos I can't help myself.
How on earth did you get that squirrel to pose like that for you?
Elizabeth,
Oh so beautiful...I needed that! I think I am going to head to bed and dream of spring flowers and all the wonderful smells too! Can't wait till we get any flowers at all..ours are just trying to break through the ground!
Elizabeth - You have beautiful gardens! I liked the picture of the cute little squirrel, too. :)
